LOG Illustrated was a contemporary art magazine. LOG was published in tabloid format three times a year by the Physics Room, a Creative New Zealand funded contemporary art project space in Christchurch, New Zealand. [It was hatched by Tessa Laird and Gwynneth Porter in 1997. Tessa was the then Manager of The Physics Room and edited it until late 1999 with Gwynneth Porter as Contributing Editor. Then they swapped places - Tessa now lives in LA and Gwynneth in Auckland.] The last designer was Richard Shaw (after stalwart designer Warren Olds became too busy teaching).
Rather than being strictly about-art dialogue-based, LOG was conceived, in 1997, to provide a site for artists and writers to experiment with images and texts in a print format. We supported writing-as-art and new pageworks from a variety of art practitioners both from New Zealand and overseas. We payed nominal fees to contributors.
We did commission some content material, but a lot of what went into LOG arrived unsolicited. We invited contributions from artists and writers everywhere.
This website features archives of key articles and pageworks from each issue of LOG. From issue 9 onward, each www edition of the magazine was also accompanied by special online-only-content.
LOG was produced with the generous assistance of Creative New Zealand / Toi Aotearoa.
