Western culture has an obsession with image and name. We deify pop stars and media icons, not to mention brand names. This phenomenon has an extremely handy side effect for a few people involved. They make shiploads of cash.

We buy image, we don't by product. Product is only a convenient vessel for whatever company's latest flagship. We are taught, by the same people who push this shit, that to be famous and well known (and preferably well sorted, financially) is the most desirable thing on earth. Become a rock-star, kids!!! Chicks will dig ya, guys'll worship ya and you'll get stinking rich!!! FAME is important. What happens then, when a kid from Woolston, or even from Cashmere has a moment of clarity early on in puberty and thinks, "well fuck, there are eight or so BILLION people on this earth, my chances of getting some of that fame stuff are pretty limited if I go the route most of those people take, what am I to do?"

Some start writing on walls.
