25 October - 25 November 2006
Sweet Punch

Gun Holmström, Vanna Bowles & Robert Johansson, Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, Raakel Kuukka
Curated by Emma Bugden

Opening preview: Tuesday 24 October 2006, 5.30pm

Sweet Punch showcases moving image works from the Nordic region. Documenting real events and people, the works are characterized by a sense of clarity and simplicity. In Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen and Tellervo Kalleinen’s work The Complaints Choir (2005) the artists collaborate with the citizens of Birmingham, whose complaints about their city are transformed into a feel-good singalong anthem, while Pugnae Spectaculum (2004), by Robert Johansson and Vanna Bowles, documents a live boxing match between the artists at the Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo. The emotions displayed range from joyous to meditative to heartfelt and painful, but all offer an honesty of approach and style.

A partnership project between te tuhi - the mark, Manukau and The Physics Room, Christchurch. Sweet Punch will be accompanied by an exhibition catalogue published by te tuhi and The Physics Room with assistance from FRAME-FUND. The initial research for this exhibition was undertaken with funding assistance from NIFCA.
